The Little Pirate Mermaid, now at the Center for Puppetry Arts through July 15, puts a cute spin on the familiar Hans Christian Anderson/Disney fairy tale. The story is similar enough to familiar versions of the tale that little kids can follow along, but different enough (this little mermaid doesn't just want to live on land, she wants to be a pirate) to hold the attention of slightly older kids.

The sets and puppets are far more elaborate, colorful and varied than the production photos let on: Black-lit underwater scenes with bright coral, octopuses, blowfish, seahorses, eels and sharks are especially trippy, and the use of shadow puppets and projections for fight scenes are well done. It's hard to pick a favorite moment, but we loved how the little mermaid gradually turns her crew into the first ship of gentle, helpful pirates. Of course they all gather on deck to sing Kumbay-arrrgh.

"The Little Pirate Mermaid" plays at the Center for Puppetry Arts through July 15. Tues-Fri: 10am & 12pm; Sat: 11am, 1pm, & 3pm; Sun: 1pm & 3pm. For more information or to purchase tickets visit the Center for Puppetry Arts.
