Atlanta composer Mark Gresham is among 10 artists to receive an honorable mention in the "In 27 Pieces: The Hilary Hahn Encores" composition contest.

Hahn is one of the most famous and admired young violinists in the world, and her contest was designed to showcase new short-form pieces by contemporary composers. Contest winner Jeff Myers' piece "The Angry Birds of Kauai" will be recorded by Hahn to appear on her forthcoming album "In 27 Pieces." Hahn will premiere works by the honorable mentions, including Gresham's piece entitled "Café Cortadito", as concert encores sometime before December 2015.

Submissions for the contest were received on Hahn's site between November 2011 and March 2012. Over 400 entries were sent in, in the form of a PDF plus a synthesized audio file. A project assistant removed all identifying markings from the scores to make the entries anonymous, and Hahn was the only judge, reviewing all entries over three months. The results were announced on June 15, 2012.

Gresham's compositions have been performed in the U.S. by instrumental ensembles such as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Youth Orchestra, Bent Frequency, Thamyris, Georgia State University Percussion Ensemble, and the Atlanta Symphony Brass Quintet. In addition to being a composer and conductor, Gresham is also a writer and music journalist: his writing has appeared in this publication and in frequent reviews for the website ArtsATL.
