Arts organization The Lucky Penny is turning one on Thursday, and they're planning a big birthday bash to mark the occasion. You're way invited.

The party takes place this Thursday night, June 28, at MASS Collective, 364 Nelson St, beginning at 7 p.m. The evening includes an open bar presided over by Atlanta drag sensation Brigitte Bidet, a cardboard dance floor with tunes spun by DJ Git 'Em Gurl, and a preview of the Lucky Penny's up-coming dance production Threshold. Tickets are $15, available at the door. The price includes cake and drinks (ID required) with all proceeds going to support the Lucky Penny's endeavors. Bring your heaviest bag of pennies for a chance to win free tickets to the Threshold premiere in August.

It's said that the first anniversary is the "paper anniversary," and it fits perfectly in this case. Currently in the works for the organization - and a major part of their fundraising efforts - is the new work Threshold, a hugely ambitious performance piece slated to take place August 16-19 in a two-story, structurally sound house made entirely out of cardboard. The work is an unusual collaboration between the artists of the Lucky Penny and the prestigious Atlanta architectural firm of Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects.

Atlanta has never had a giant cardboard house before, and it's way past time we did. Watch the video below or visit the team's Kickstarter page to learn more and get involved.

Although it's been around for just one year, the Lucky Penny - which grew out of Atlanta's famous Dance Truck - has a lot to celebrate. They've sponsored artist talks, helped plant the vision at PLOT, trucked dance out to the TBA Festival in Portland, and created a landmark evening of dance, film, and visual arts on 11.11.11. We're the lucky ones.
