First Slice 7/1/12: Atlanta breaks heat record, manages not to go overboard with the 'Hotlanta' headline nonsense

Where well be
1. Saturday's high temperature of 106 degrees was the hottest in Atlanta's recorded history. Meteorologists say Sunday's weather should be a bit cooler - expect a high of 103 degrees. Our advice: Stay indoors and relax in a bathtub filled with ice. If you must go outdoors, be sure to wear sunscreen, dress appropriately, drink plenty of water, and plan your trips so that you're always near one of the city's "cooling stations."

2. Things we learn, among others, from the excellent New York Times Magazine profile about Alex White, the one-time professional snitch who played a key role in busting the Atlanta police officers involved in the Kathryn Johnston killing: When in doubt about the law enforcement officers asking you questions, run, run, run to the Varsity.

3. MARTA has apparently struck a deal with state lawmakers that would give the cash-strapped transit agency more control (for a few years) of its main funding source: a 1-cent sales tax collected in Fulton and DeKalb counties. The catch: agreeing not to fight a legislative proposal that would give North Fulton cities two seats on the MARTA board.

4. Note to University of Georgia employees: If the Human Resources department sends out a friendly memo reminding employees not to engage in prostitution, please send it our way.
