City Hall was evacuated this afternoon after the Atlanta Police Department received a call about a "suspicious package." According to the AJC, the package in question is a "black bag that was hanging among trees."
An APD spokesman says police, Atlanta Fire and Rescue, and the Capitol Police closed streets within a two-block radius and re-routed traffic each way. The Bomb Squad and units from the Department of Homeland Security were called to the scene.
"Presently we are awaiting the Bomb Squads units to relay more specific information," an APD spokesman said in a statement.
UPDATE, 5:58 p.m. A police spokesman says the APD's bomb unit detonated the "suspicious package," which was actually a black backpack that contained toiletries and clothing. All streets are now reopened.
