First Slice 7/6/12: Whatever, just blame the heat

1) A new law that took effect at the start of the month has Georgians cringing at the painfully long wait times at some Department of Driver Services offices (you know, that place everyone calls the DMV). The Secure ID Act requires folks to renew their licenses in person and bring several additional documents to help prove they are who they say they are. Because of Independence Day, the DDS has only been open like two days this month, so they’re still trying to work out the kinks.

2) Speaking of new laws, in the year since Georgia passed measures aimed at curbing illegal immigration in the state the number of Mexican nationals filing for asylum has quadrupled. Still, it seems to be a last-ditch delaying tactic for some facing deportation rather than a viable path to permanent residency. The judges in the Atlanta Immigration Court maintain a denial rate of about 80 percent, one of the highest in the country.

3) Car won’t start? Blame the heat. Sat on the couch eating Cheetos all day? Blame the heat. Dropped your pants and exposed yourself in the McDonald’s parking lot? Blame the heat. Well, that’s exactly what one Marietta man did, probably figuring it would be cooler in jail. Lucky for him he was taken to the Cobb County jail and didn’t end up in Atlanta’s detention center. Since their AC broke last month, reports say it’s been a little stuffy.
