First Slice 7/12/12: Killer chicken bugs

1) Pay your electric bill! Or at least don’t steal electricity to power your marijuana grow house. An Austell man just learned that pro-tip the hard way.

2) Nearly a year after the artsy structure that adorned the 17th Street bridge came crashing down on the interstate below, officials are getting ready to start repairs. If all goes well, pedestrians will get their sidewalk back by year’s end.

3) The way we raise chicken could very well be killing us — or at least creating resistant bacteria that could kill us. A huge investigative series out today tracks the link between antibiotics given to chicken as they’re raised with the increase in a resistant form of E. coli most commonly known to cause urinary tract infections.

4) A report from the FBI on whether Joe Paterno and other Penn State officials covered up the sex scandal involving former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky is expected to be released today.

5) Higher education comes at a cost, but in Georgia students tend to fair a little better. A new report shows that Georgia college students, on average, graduate with student loan debt more than $5,000 below the national average. HOPE scholarships and lower-cost tuition to public universities in the state may have something to do with it. Still, $19,000 is a lot to owe, right?
