Time and Place: Dancing in the street

Watching the performance I was intrigued by the mob of photographers shooting the dancers.

This week’s time and place was shot at 8:07 p.m., July 6, 2012, at 15th and Peachtree streets. The photograph was taken during the gloATL performance. Watching the performance I was intrigued by the mob of photographers shooting the dancers. For me it got to the point that it was almost as interesting (and distracting) watching the photographers, texters, tweeters (tweakers?), cell phoners, smart phoners, facebookers (and alt news photographer) react to the dancers as it was to watch the dancers themselves.

I am all for the democratization of photography which has occurred with the access to technology and the spread of the web. But really, what is it with this obsession with recording things rather then experiencing them? It feels like high school how our culture has become so motivated by this compulsion to record something and get it up on our social networks to show how cool we are rather then just watching, feeling and experiencing the moment.
