Music in Commercials: The Original "Free Credit" Band is Back

The Dukes of Hazzard?
  • The Dukes of Hazzard?

In the history of television, only a few switcheroo's ever worked.

The most famous example is Darrin on "Bewitched." When illness prevented original Darrin Dick York (1964-1969) from carrying on, he was replaced by Dick Sargent (1969-1972).

Most cases, like when Bo and Luke Duke were replaced by cousins Coy and Vance, fail spectacularly.

Such is the case with the Free Credit Report band.

A few years back, the Credit Score aggregator, whose catchy jingles were simply infectious (Now instead of lookin' fly & rollin' phat/My legs are sticking to the vinyl and my posse's gettin' laughed at...) was forced by a legal challenge to change their name from Free Credit Report to Free Credit Score.

In the process, the company—leery about reports (ahem) that the band itself was fake, an advertising firm's concoction, the musical equivalent of the Monkees and Milli Vanilli, a band that didn't even record its own songs, a band whose lead singer is a French Canadian actor called Eric Violette, who sounds like this when he talks...

—kicked the band to the curb and held a much ballyhooed contest to replace them.

The new band, the Victorious Secrets, never caught on:

Now Free Credit Score is kicking them to the curb, and bringing the original band back!

The new campaign is being lauded as a return to form, with commentary about band getting back together in the commercials themselves (including a "dig" at the Victorious Secrets).

They've even given the band their own Web site: http://freecreditscoreband.com/

Wonder if they'll go on tour with Violette's other real band, God Against God, whose music is decidedly less catchy?
