First slice 7/25/12: Horrific mass shooting boosts gun sales

1. Across the nation, but particularly in Colorado, gun dealers have reported a sharp increase in the number of people submitting to background checks so they can purchase guns. Bloomberg News reports: "In the four days since the shooting early Friday, dealers submitted 3,647 requests for state background checks required to buy a firearm, said Susan Medina, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. That's 41% more than the 2,583 requests during the same four days the prior week and a 38% increase over the 2,636 checks during the first Friday to Monday in July." The idea of fighting gun violence with more guns is brain-explodey enough, but people aren't necessarily stocking up on firearms because they're afraid of sociopathic mass murderers — they're reportedly more afraid liberals will attempt to push for stricter gun control laws. I don't like this world anymore.

3. The developer of the home treadmill passed away at the age of 96. Thank God he wasn't a casualty of his own creation like that poor guy who invented the Segway.

4. UPDATE: The charming, young couple who inadvertently allowed their 13-month-old grandchild to eat cocaine surrendered to police yesterday.
