If you haven’t made it over to Chastain Arts Center to check out the exhibition J'Ouvert: At the Devil's Playground — which features work by Brooklyn-based photographer Radcliffe Roye — don’t fret just yet; the show comes to a close Saturday, July 28, so you’ve still got a little time.

Of course, there’s obviously a contingent of art lovers out there who didn’t catch wind of J’Ouvert and perhaps have never heard of Roye. Well, for the uninitiated, this is actually Roye’s first exhibition in Atlanta (and the South in general). A documentary photographer of Jamaican heritage who specializes in editorial and environmental portraits, he is inspired by the “raw and gritty lives of grassroots people.”

The pieces that comprise J’Ouvert depict scenes from Brooklyn’s actual J’Ouvert celebration, which signals the start of Carnival in communities around the world. Roye sought to capture images of painted and costumed revelers who traditionally march the streets in the early morning hours — and served as a source of fear for his younger self. The end result is collection that is both magical and haunting.

All that said, scoot on over to Chastain with a quickness.

Through July 28. Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Chastain Arts Center, 135 West Wieuca Road, N.W. 404-252-2927. www.ocaatlanta.com.
