Obama wants to 'fast-track' review process for downtown train and bus terminal

It appears the downtown train and bus terminal envisioned for "the Gulch," that massive hole of asphalt and woe in downtown Atlanta, has been given a shot in the arm. Or at least a nod of approval from President Barack Obama and the federal government.

Congressman John Lewis, D-Atlanta, Mayor Kasim Reed, state transportation officials and development executives are expected to announce tomorrow morning that the project, which would include mixed-use development and a new street grid, has been selected for the Presidential Infrastructure Dashboard Program.

The program aims to speed along the federal permitting process for select "high-priority" infrastructure projects that could stimulate the economy, such as rail lines and renewable energy projects. According to media reports, a spot on the dashboard could reduce the amount of time the terminal would need to receive the feds' OK from nearly four years to around 18 months.

Whether this move means we're more likely to see federal attention for high-speed rail — perhaps an Atlanta to Savannah route, which Mayor Kasim Reed said he wants "really bad" during a recent speech to public transit professionals — remains to be seen.
