News First Slice 8/3/12: The South's crowning achievements

1) If your kid misses too much school you, the parent, could end up in jail. Its called educational neglect, and police say kids who don’t go to school regularly are more likely to drop out. If they drop out, they’re more likely to end up in a prison cell or lean toward a life of crime. Roughly nine out of 10 Georgia prisoners are high school dropouts.
2) Apparently folks in the South often eat their dinner “against a backdrop of race and religion.” With all the Chick-Fil-Gay controversies, the New York Times decided to look at the Southernisms of eating, highlighting two of what seem to be the region’s crowning achievements: the founding of Chick-Fil-A and Waffle House.
3) Who stole the Civil War urinal painting? That’s what the operators of the Kennesaw House in Marietta are wondering. Its been equated with the first theft at the location, when in 1862 Union spies stole a steam engine and led Confederates on “The Great Locomotive Chase.”
4) Some Dekalb residents are a little upset that county commissioners have used more than $9,000 of tax payer’s money so far this year to feed themselves. Guess there really is a thing with Southerners and their food, or at least their money.
