News First slice 8/21/12: Federal appeals court upholds anti-immigrant law

1. The the Arizona-esque immigration law that basically allows the police to racially profile immigrants — illegal or otherwise — but that stipulates that they can't actually racially profile immigrants because that would be unconstitutional was upheld by a three-judge panel in Atlanta yesterday. The decision said: “Reliance on race, color, or national origin that is constitutionally prohibited, however, is expressly forbidden by the Georgia statute. It is inappropriate for us to assume that the state will disregard its own law, and we therefore reject the argument in this respect, keeping in mind that unconstitutional application of the statute could be challenged in later litigation.” Stay tuned for later litigation.
2. New Orleans is no longer the most blighted city in the United States, says non-profit organization based in New Orleans. (And this is bad news for a couple cities in Michigan.)
3. City Council attempts to stop city workers from jawin' on the phone while they're toolin' around town.
4. I hope if Rep. Akin refuses to pull out of his congressional race against everyone's will, the Senatorial body magically shuts down and prevents itself from being impregnated with his idiocy. (That was all a stretch.)
