Glenn Richardson, former House Speaker who resigned in disgrace, to run for state Senate

Gov. Nathan Deal's decision to appoint a state senator to a judgeship has created an open seat in the Gold Dome's upper chamber — and Glenn Richardson, the former state House Speaker who resigned nearly three years ago in a headline-grabbing ethics scandal, says he'll jump into the race. Richardson, who attempted suicide in November 2009 and underwent treatment for depression, told 11 Alive's Jaye Watson that he plans to be upfront with voters about his past.

Some conservatives, including Charlie Harper at Peach Pundit, have urged the speaker to not return to politics.

It'll be interesting to watch, should Richardson win the election and return to the Capitol, to see how he comes down on ethics reform.
