First Slice 9/2/12: Ethics probe into governor included talks with FBI

Whats in the paper today? Oh, Jesus...
State ethics officials met several times with federal prosecutors and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents to discuss their investigation into Gov. Nathan Deal. The state ethics commission later cut the officials' salaries, leading them to quit. One of the U.S. attorneys who cooperated with the officials on the investigation was later appointed to a judgeship by the governor.

Speaking of the state's chief executive: A progressive group targeted Deal during Saturday's University of Georgia season opener — an event which, speaking from experience, includes lots of young people and politicians — with a banner blaming the governor for cuts to the HOPE Scholarship.

Clark Atlanta University's Mighty Marching Panthers has been suspended from banging drums and tooting horns in a flamboyant fashion after university officials learned of alleged hazing within its ranks.

A young man who died after a 45-foot fall from the upper tier of the Georgia Dome during Friday's game between North Carolina State and the University of Tennessee was seen drinking before the game, a witness told investigators. The Fulton County medical examiner's office is awaiting toxicology reports.

Three public relations employees at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport were recently sacked — why that happened no one's telling — and all media inquiries about the world's busiest aviation hub must now go through the mayor's office. Very interesting.

Syrian rebels, hoping to thwart the government's increasing use of helicopters and fighter jets to crack down on the insurgency, have started targeting airstrips and bases — one of which they reportedly captured.
