Downtowners plan to transform overlooked block for one night with art, pop-up shops, food trucks, and more

Last year, while reporting a cover story about the glorious past, depressing present, and uncertain future of south downtown, I became fascinated with a one-block section of South Broad Street between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Mitchell Street. The buildings are just the right height and the sidewalks are wide. The only problem is that most of the storefronts, save for a family-owned pharmacy and a nightclub, are vacant and boarded-up. And that, according to people I interviewed from the neighborhood, ne'er-do-wells openly used drugs and threw trash on the street. But outside of all that, you could see that the block had potential. It just needed a purpose and people.

Between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, downtown residents, businesses and community leaders plan to bring some life to the South Broad Street and transform the block with "art, pop-up shops, street performers, food trucks, al fresco dining, tactical urbanism," and more. The "Brighten Up Broad Street" event is organized by the Atlanta Downtown Neighborhood Association with support from Central Atlanta Progress, Intown Property Management, LAZ Parking, MARTA, and others. What to expect, according to the event's website:

Food
Munch — Pan-Asian street food serving everything from Bánh mì to Southern sushi
Streatery — all-natural beef hot dogs, veggie dogs, and more

Retail/Pop-Up
Miller’s Rexall — a third generation family business established 1965, home of Run Devil Run
Fallen Arrows — eco-conscious t-shirts from local artists
JimiFlix! — fine art photography

Entertainment
The Imperial OPA Circus & Band — astounding and sensational entertainment
Team Artboy! — ready to draw your caricature
Atlanta Movie Tours — trace the footsteps of your favorite television and movie characters

The get-together has attracted interest — according to the group's Facebook event page, more than 85 people have signed up to attend.
