First Slice 9/14/12: ACLU sues Georgia on behalf of KKK group

1. Get this: The American Civil Liberties Union, or ACLU, has filed a lawsuit against the state of Georgia on behalf of the International Keystone Knights of the Ku Klux Klan after the state refused to let the pale-complected group adopt a segment of highway earlier this year.

“The fundamental right to free speech is not limited to only those we agree with or groups that are inoffensive,” Debbie Seagraves, executive director of the ACLU Foundation of Georgia, said in a release. “The government cannot pick or choose who is protected by the Constitution.”

You know, she might be on to something there. You can check out the whole complaint filed by the ACLU right here (PDF).

While it’s a little bit of a blast from the past, back in 2010 CL photographer Joeff Davis attended a rally of The Georgia Knight Riders and Knights of the Ku Klux Klan down in Nahunta, Ga. — and there’s a video of it.

2. MARTA is the in pilot phase of a $17 million overhaul program to retrofit all of its buses, mobility vans, and trains with a slew of security cameras. After the pilot ends in October, all 524 buses in its fleet will carry nine cameras, three on the outside and six on the inside, recording both audio and video. The programs approval came after a string of bus operator attacks and passenger robberies in 2011.

3. After Doraville resident Susan Chin got a jaw-dropping $832.66 water bill recently — compared with to her normal bill in the $25 range — it took an inquiry by 11Alive before the Dekalb Water Department admitted the water meter was broken and adjusted her bill.

4. The Georgia Department of Labor office over on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard has just reopened after a water main break shuttered its doors nearly three weeks ago.

5. With Gwynedd gone up north somewhere, we don’t get nearly enough cute and furry animal coverage up in here. Enjoy this video of pandas wrestling for food in southwest China (is that a birthday cake?).
