Large retail development planned near Glenwood Park along Atlanta Beltline
Enough room for another intown Walmart, perhaps?
Remember in June when we reportedthat a big retailer — the word was Walmart — was rumored to be moving in across the street from Glenwood Park and along the Atlanta Beltline? And then things got real quiet about the proposal?
Well, a developer on Monday filed plans to develop a 10-acre property on Glenwood Avenue that’s next door to the mixed-use project and 22-mile greenspace, parks, and transit loop.
Fuqua Development, which is led by veteran Atlanta developer Jeff Fuqua, wants to build a 155,000 square-foot space to house a retail anchor tenant and 40,000 square feet for “neighborhood-scale” retail on the property. According to the city and county, the parcel’s owned by Alpharetta-based William Brothers Concrete.
Locals might remember Fuqua as the former president of Florida-based Sembler who helped develop the Edgewood Retail District and Town Brookhaven, among other large-scale projects. He left Sembler earlier this year to start his own firm and, most recently, has been battling Buckhead-area residents and other Atlanta neighborhood leaders to build a mixed-use development anchored by a 150,000 square-foot Walmart near the Lindbergh MARTA station.
We contacted Walmart reps and will update if we hear back. We also called Fuqua to ask whether he has a retailer lined up for the space and to get more info about his proposal. An executive said she’d pass along our request. We’ll update if we hear back. Got info? Send us a line.
