Protesters commemorate one-year anniversary of Troy Davis' execution

One year ago on Friday, death-row inmate Troy Davis was executed at 11:08 p.m. in Jackson, Ga. The weeks leading up to his execution were filled with protests at home and overseas condemning his death sentence and injustices within the prison system. While Georgia's decision to follow through with the execution left many feeling hollow after fighting for years, it hasn't stopped protests by people who find the corrections system unjust.

On Friday night, a crowd gathered in downtown's Woodruff Park to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Troy Davis' execution. The rally brought together a diverse group of people to speak about the injustices within the United States' prison system, as well how to better function in a country that condones such a system. A drum circle played throughout the talks.

At around 9 p.m., the rally turned into a march against mass incarceration headed toward the Martin Luther King Jr. Center. The 100 or so attendees marched east on Auburn Avenue to the beat of drums and chants saying "I am Troy Davis!" Once the group arrived at the center, candles were distributed while several members of the crowd gave personal accounts of injustices they say exist in Georgia prisons.

The overall demonstration lasted around four hours, with the crowd returning to Woodruff Park for a vigil in Troy Davis' honor at 11:08 p.m., the exact time of Davis' execution. "This was beyond a rally," said Kalonji Changa of the FTP Movement, which organized the event. "It served as a tribute against oppression and the unjust jail system in out country."
