First Slice 10/5/12: Fake drugs and alien power

1. For the first time in 20 years, come Nov. 7 you won’t see exit polling in Georgia or 18 other states on election night. A a joint venture of television networks and the Associated Press confirmed the shift to the Washington Post in the face of mounting survey costs. On the19-state selection:

Comparing this list with the election map, reveals how carefully the exit poll planners allocated resources. All 19 of the states with no exit polls are classified as either “solid Obama” or “solid Romney,” and there is only one “toss-up” gubernatorial or U.S. Senate race not on the list: the competitive North Dakota match-up of Heidi Heitkamp and Rick Berg.

2. One of the TSA agents charged with smuggling fake drugs through security at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport we told you about a few months back has plead guilty to multiple charges, according to the FBI. Timothy Gregory, 26, of DeKalb County, now faces a maximum sentence up to life in prison and a $10 million fine when he goes back in front of a federal judge in early December.

3. Workers at multiple Wal-Mart stores went on strike yesterday for the first time in the company’s 50-year history to protest what they call retaliation from the company and management for attempting to organize. The retail giant has been union-free in North America throughout it’s history, at times taking aggressive measures to stay that way.

4. Based on a more than 50-year-old hypothesis, astronomers at Penn State have launched a two-year search for extraterrestrial life looking for something that may or may not exist: massive solar power planets near a civilization's home star. The theory, put forth by Freeman Dyson in 1960, predicted that every civilization would eventually run out of energy on their home planet (provided they survived long enough to do so) and be forced to rely on space-based solar power — marking a hurdle in the planet’s evolution. Who knows, maybe they’re onto something.

5. Bust out the jackets and scarves, 'cause its going to get a little chilly this weekend.
