Plan your car trips and depressing walks across the Gulch accordingly. The Martin Luther King Jr. bridge that spans the massive railyard and parking lot and links Castleberry Hill to south downtown has been closed to cars and pedestrians so engineers can determine how much damage the span suffered during a fire last night. The bridge is closed between between Mitchell Street and Centennial Olympic Park Drive.
"The structure is closed indefinitely pending a full inspection of the bridge for structural integrity, investigation of the fire, and determination of cost for repairs," says a release from the city's Department of Public Works.
According to 11 Alive, fire officials think some of the damage might have been caused by a fire at a homeless camp underneath the bridge. Approximately 30 people were evacuated from the camp without injury, the station says.
Despite published reports, we hear the new $8.8 million Mitchell Street bridge that features fancy bike lanes and street lights that seemingly never switched on is fine.
