The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation has released its list of sites across the state that it says are facing various threats to their existence. Each year, the nonprofit’s “Places in Peril” list aims to raise awareness about the issues affecting the sites, which include buildings, structures, districts, and landmarks.

“This is the Trust’s eighth annual Places in Peril list,” Mark C. McDonald, the organization’s president, said in a press release. “We hope the list will continue to bring preservation action to Georgia’s imperiled historic resources by highlighting ten representative sites.”

Two Atlanta sites, Candler Park Golf Course and Sweet Auburn Commercial District, were included among this year’s places. In 1922, Coca-Cola founder Asa Candler donated more than 50 acres of land that would become a public park with a nine-hole golf course. Atlanta’s Department of Parks, however, have considered closing Candler Park Golf Course in recent years.

Sweet Auburn once played a vital role in the Atlanta’s African-American business community and as part of the Civil Rights movement. But the historic area has languished over the years, despite attempts to revitalize the commercial district. Many city leaders hope the proposed downtown streetcar will help spark renewed investment. Earlier this year the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s named Sweet Auburn to its 11 Most Endangered Places list.
