Time and Place: Jet-powered school bus

It’s a freakin’ jet-powered school bus racing a biplane! What more do you want to know?

Okay, okay — just a little context.

This week’s time and place photo was taken at 2:18 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 20 at the Northwest Atlanta Airport in Paulding County. A largely pale-complected crowd, many blending into the hillside in camouflaged onesies, crawled out of their respective Georgia hills and valleys to sit in camping chairs and stare at the sky as a host of planes looped-de-looped, barrel-rolled, and dive-bombed their way through routines of aerobatic feats at the first annual Salute America air show.

Believe it or not, this high-speed bus — topping 300 mph running down the straightaway — wasn’t even the main crowd pleaser. Another jet-propelled ground dweller, a porta potty, took to airstrip earlier in the day (sadly, I was off getting a pulled pork sandwich and some soggy fries when it happened).

It was the first event of its kind for the newly opened airport tucked in the trees about 45 minutes northwest of Atlanta, but if I had to guess it won’t be the last.

Check out other photos from the air show.
