Celebrate National Opera Week with "Otello" broadcast, scavenger hunt

National Opera Week begins today, Friday, October 26, and runs through Sunday, November 4. That's more than a week, but, hey, opera has always been about excess. Since we can't take off the entire ten days to sit on the couch, eat bon-bons, and listen to Maria Callas (we checked), we've been searching for some other ways to celebrate, and we think we may have found just the things.

Renée Fleming as Desdemona in Verdis Otello
First up: On Saturday, October 27, beginning at 12:55 p.m., The Metropolitan Opera will broadcast its production of Verdi's Otello live to local movie theaters. A recent New York Times review which moderately praised Renée Fleming's performance as Desdemona while trashing the rest of the production also hinted that this may be the very last opportunity to see the superstar soprano perform in what was one of the signature roles of her early career as she moves on to other repertoire.

Secondly, The Atlanta Opera is inviting the Atlanta community to participate in #OperaSleuthATL, an Online Opera Scavenger Hunt beginning Monday, October 29, and lasting through Friday, November 2, 2012.

Participants can become “opera detectives” by uncovering clues scattered throughout Atlanta and photographing their progress along the way. Detectives will be challenged to solve opera riddles, find venues, take pictures and submit their evidence to the Atlanta Opera’s Facebook and Twitter pages using the hashtag #OperaSleuthATL or email to socialmedia@atlantaopera.org. The event is free and open to all ages.

How to Play: A daily clue will be posted on the Atlanta Opera website promptly at 9 a.m. every morning of the Scavenger Hunt (Oct 29-Nov 2). Participants will have until 9 p.m. that evening to solve the opera riddle, find the venue, take a picture and submit the evidence via Facebook, Twitter or email (socialmedia@atlantaopera.org) using the hashtag #OperaSleuthATL to receive a full 50 points. On the last day, Friday, November 2, detectives will have between the hours of 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. to uncover the final clue. Once participants capture the clue using their Smart Phones or cameras, they will go to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. The first contestant to arrive with the greatest number of points will claim the Grand Prize.
