Man asks for $15,000, plane ticket after making CNN bomb threat

Police investigated a bomb threat at the CNN Center early this morning, which forced them to shut down portions of Marietta Street and Centennial Olympic Park Drive for several hours.

Around 4 a.m., a man called the Atlanta Police saying that he had planted a chemical device somewhere on the campus. APD, along with Turner and Omni Hotel security staff, swept the entire complex for signs of the bomb, but found no such evidence. They completed their sweep of the building and reopened the surrounding roads just after 6 a.m.

The man who phoned in the threat also made an extortion attempt, demanding $15,000 and a plane ticket out of the city. An APD spokesperson failed to comment, however, on whether the suspect had also wanted them to cover the already discounted $4.95 charge for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport's Wi-Fi as well.

According to Atlanta Police Capt. Adam Lee III, the individual sounded "depressed," and claimed that he was "wanted by the federal government" for a supposed RICO violation. At the moment, APD is working on tracing the call's origins as well as finding a motive behind the threat.
