This week's Time and Place photo was shot at the corner of Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard and Lee Street on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012. I was checking out the street for an upcoming story. I met a lot of different people in the area, including D., who was trying to sell a 9-week-old pitbull puppy to passing cars. "I want $100 for it," he said. "I spend the money back into the dogs."
D. has sold two other pitbulls from a nine-dog litter on the same street corner. He says he tries not to get too attached to the dogs when they're born so he does not give them a name. "I let the owner name it," he said.
The dogs are not for fighting, D. said. He tells potential owners that "if you plan on fighting them I might as well reimburse you now because they ain't fighting dogs." They are raised around kids, he added.
I spoke with a number of people and stopped by several stores along Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard that afternoon. A few more photos from the visit after the break.
Ambassador Doosua York says he runs the Nuwaubian National Embassy out of the Celebrity Status Hair Salon on Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard. The Nuwaubians used to own a 467-acre compound in Putnam County complete with pyramids and a Sphinx. The land was seized by the federal government after the group's leader was arrested on child molestation charges. York claims the Nuwaubian leader is innocent. He recently filed a lawsuit against the United States government trying to recover the group's land and to free its leader.
Kareem Khaliq has been selling items on Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard between 25 and 30 years.
Lakisha Petty bites her lip during a 4-hour hair-braiding session at Laze Hair Braiding. "I am tender headed," she said, adding that the pain was worth it because her hair was going to look pretty when the session was finished.
A man sells pies to passing cars. He was too busy to say much else other than that his pies were two for $5.
