First Lunch Slice 11/23/12: Robert E. Lee's birthday

Posted By on Fri, Nov 23, 2012 at 12:13 PM

1. Protestors set up shop outside of Wal-Mart on Howell Mill this morning. The climax? Around 9 a.m. an SUV slowly waded through the picket line, bumping a handful of protestors out of the way. The group had been letting cars in the parking deck after the vehicles came to a complete stop, apparently. The group, Making Change at Walmart, is demanding higher pay, expanded healthcare and the right to unionize without retaliation for Wal-Mart employees.

2. And on the other side of the globe, Wal-Mart just suspended several employees in India as part of a corruption investigation. Details are pretty scarce, but the news is expected to put a damper of the company's aggressive expansion plans in one of the world's largest emerging markets.

3. In shopping terms, the fourth Thursday of November may no longer be known as Thanksgiving. As more retailers start their holiday bargains earlier and earlier, Turkey Day has taken on a new title: Grey Thursday.

4. And when it comes to official Georgia holidays, today isn't Black Friday. No, it's Robert E. Lee's birthday. The Peach State is one of a handful of Southern bastions that still observes Confederate holidays. But, if it makes you feel any better, at least we don't combine the celebration of Lee's birthday and MLK Day, like Mississippi and Alabama.

5. UPDATE: Wal-Mart Black Friday video! I'm pretty sure someone gets bit at 01:15.
