Arrest made in months-old Grant Park homicide

Nearly three months after David McReynolds was gunned down in front of a vacant house in Grant Park, Atlanta Police have announced an arrest in the case.

Andre Byrd, 22, has been charged with murder in addition to nine other counts stemming from the July 26 shooting incident near 799 Hill Street. In a statement, Atlanta Police spokesperson Kim Jones said the investigation is ongoing and declined to go into further detail.

Nearby residents described hearing at least one gunshot and witnessing three young men run from the area the day of the shooting. Atlanta Police brought in canine units, but were unable to track the suspects or uncover ballistic evidence.

A month later, officers and community members canvassed the neighborhood, going door-to-door asking for information and handing out fliers. Police said these types of "Tactical Community Neighborhood Canvasses" have had a significant impact on homicide investigations in the past, although the effect in McReynolds' case is still unclear.

McReyonlds, 54, was reportedly gunned down walking home from a local grocery store he frequented to play the lottery. The day he was killed he allegedly "hit the numbers real big," according to Angela Sheats who lived with the victim, and collected his winnings at the store.

The victim's family said they believed he was targeted.

The Grant Park Neighborhood Association, or GPNA, has been an outspoken advocate in the months since the shooting, raising more than $3,000 to fund a series of billboards and offer additional reward money for information about the case.

Near the end of July, neighbors expressed their disappointment in media coverage surrounding the shooting on the GPNA Facebook page.

"When bartender John Henderson was murdered in 2009, the entire city was outraged. Before the trial that convicted John Henderson's killer, dozens of gang members were arrested by a joint FBI and GBI task force.

It's not likely that Sheila and Arthur Wallace [who lived with McReynolds] can afford to put up billboards in memory of David McReynolds. Publicity related to his death was scant at best; the news reports are already fading."

Byrd is currently being held without bond in the Fulton County Jail.
