THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY (PG-13), 3 stars: In director Peter Jackson’s fourth adaptation of the classic JRR Tolkien novel series, he explores the prequel to his Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings series. This tale about a timid hobbit who rises to the occasion to help a group of dwarfs reclaim their home from a dragon. Doubted by the band of hardened dwarfs, only the wise, old wizard Gandalf sees the power little Bilbo possesses. While it may not live up to the expectations set by the first three films Jackson made, there’s still some magic in The Hobbit’‘.

DEADFALL (KIN): (R) After a group of thieves rob a casino, the getaway isn’t so clean, an accident sends the car skidding off the ice covered road and into a ditch. With the driver dead, only siblings Liza and Addison survive the crash. The commotion of crash attracts the attention of a passing police officer, who Addison has to murder to keep from finding out about the casino heist. They decide its best to split up and hope they can make it to the Canadian border without getting caught. Liza, who nearly dies in a blizzard, is rescued by the son of a retired police officer. Balancing the differences of cultures, Roosevelt and the King have trouble connecting at first. GREMLINS: (PG) Joe Dante’s cult film, Gremlins is playing at midnight tonight at the Plaza Theatre. This movie, complete with slap-stick comedy, a ‘small town’ America setting, cute little furry creatures named Mogwai that can turn into dangerous little green monsters. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK: (PG) In this classic 80’s action flick, Harrison Ford plays Indiana Jones, a history professor with a knack for adventure. Approached by the American government, Jones learns of the Nazi’s plans to follow clues in order to discover the Ark of the Covenant. Believed to possess great powers, the government asks Jones to recover the priceless artifact before it falls into the Nazi’s hands.
