In 2008, then-Gov. Sonny Perdue wanted to sell land near Atlantic Station that his predecessor Roy Barnes purchased for a future commuter rail stop. But no one ever scooped up the parcel, which is located near the intersection of 17th Street and Northside Drive.

Now the State Road and Tollway Authority, the state agency that owns the land, and a real estate firm that owns the adjoining parcel have partnered to make the total 12.5-acre property available. They are accepting bids from companies to develop the properties, one of which is being considered for a possible Amtrak station.

The land sits across railroad tracks from IKEA and, if developed properly, could play a key role in the booming Westside. Amtrak selected the location because its historic Brookwood station along Peachtree Street has fallen into disrepair.

"We are open to Amtrak being a part of a proposer's package however we will entertain all potential development opportunities especially in this economic downturn," says SRTA spokeswoman Mailka Reed Wilkins.

According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Greyhound's also pondering locating a new station on the parcel. The bus carrier's downtown station near the Atlanta Police Department, which was constructed for the 1996 Summer Olympics, wasn't intended to be permanent.

Atlanta-based Carter Real Estate, a big-name developer also vying to construct a multi-use development in Turner Field's parking lot, has shown interest in the land abutting Northside Drive, the Chronicle says. A request for comment about its plans was not returned.
