
The land sits across railroad tracks from IKEA and, if developed properly, could play a key role in the booming Westside. Amtrak selected the location because its historic Brookwood station along Peachtree Street has fallen into disrepair.
"We are open to Amtrak being a part of a proposer's package however we will entertain all potential development opportunities especially in this economic downturn," says SRTA spokeswoman Mailka Reed Wilkins.
According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Greyhound's also pondering locating a new station on the parcel. The bus carrier's downtown station near the Atlanta Police Department, which was constructed for the 1996 Summer Olympics, wasn't intended to be permanent.
Atlanta-based Carter Real Estate, a big-name developer also vying to construct a multi-use development in Turner Field's parking lot, has shown interest in the land abutting Northside Drive, the Chronicle says. A request for comment about its plans was not returned.
