First Slice 12/28/12: White House petition to classify Westboro Baptist Church as hate group most popular ever

1. "I know we have fiscal cliff stuff, I know we have gun tragedies, but the most important thing right now is what ringtone was that?"

2. Donna Kristofak, the 48-year-old Cobb County resident allegedly murderED by her ex-husband earlier this month, apparently predicted her own death. After her former spouse was arrested for chasing her through a Wal-Mart parking lot six months earlier, Kristofak pled with a county judge not to release him, saying she feared for her life and a court-issued order of protection wasn't enough.

3. Georgia could lose as much as $30 million in federal highway funds due to incomplete or erroneous driver records, according to a new state audit. Among the problems, some courts either don't report or are slow to report traffic, drug, and stolen vehicle convictions to the Department of Driver Services, potentially allowing some dangerous drivers to stay behind the wheel.

4. A petition to classify the Westboro Baptist Church a hate group has received more than 260,000 signatures, becoming the biggest ever on the White House's We the People site. The Kansas-based anti-gay group is well-known for picketing at funerals of soldiers and gay Americans, and recently threatened to protest outside the funerals of the Newtown, Conn. shooting victims.

5. Hartsfield-Jackson Airport leads the nation in the number of firearms confiscated by airport security workers in 2012. More than 1,500 guns have been recovered by Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, agents across the country this year, with 90 of those coming from Atlanta's air transit hub.
