Time and Place: Peach Drop prop

Graphic designer Allan Daniels touches up the New Year's Eve "Peach" in an Austell warehouse.

"It goes into storage, it goes out of storage. We only use it once a year," says Jason Marshall, the production manager at Entertainment Design Group Inc., the firm in charge of storing and preparing the 800-pound Peach for its big night.

Since 1989, the same Peach has been dropped on New Year's Eve in downtown at Underground Atlanta to celebrate the past 365 days. The process of pulling the Peach out of storage, touching it up with paint, and rigging it with fireworks takes workers a total of about two weeks.

"It takes 60 seconds for the Peach to drop, though there are times when it takes a little longer, but I'm not holding my breath... We don't consider it 'not working' as an option," says Marshall, who will be on site tonight to monitor the fruit's plunge.

Beatles cover band Abbey Road Live will be playing the Peach Drop at Underground Atlanta this year.
