1. The Wall Street Journal looks at Atlanta to illustrate an oft overlooked trend: While homicides declined nationally in the first decade of the new millennium - most notably in major metro areas - the rate of suburban murders have been steadily increasing:

The violent-crime rate in Atlanta's suburbs rose 23% between 2000 and 2008, while the city of Atlanta's violent-crime rate dropped 49%, according to federal crime data in a May 2011 study by the Brookings Institution, a nonpartisan think tank in Washington.

2. Dirk Koetter, a candidate for some of the seven NFL head-coaching vacancies, has pulled himself from consideration and signed a contract extension to lead offensive coordination for the Falcons through next season.

3. A Bartow County school board member faces misdemeanor charges after running into a teenage girl with her SUV in a dispute over a Wal-Mart parking space.

4. A crane removing the Macy's Great Tree from atop Lenox Mall yesterday snapped, sending the conifer crashing through the department store's roof. The mishap went down before the mall opened. No one was injured, but Macy's men's department, where the tree came into the actual store, remained closed Wednesday.
