The six degrees of William Downs

A drawing that explains the connections in the latest show at Get This! Gallery

In Lilly Lampe’s review of In Unison, the group show organized by William Downs at Get This! Gallery, in this week’s paper, she describes the show as “a game of association, a six degrees of William Downs ... the connections are a multilayered blur of professional and personal relationships.”

As it happens, Downs actually scribbled out a poster-sized web of connections to explain, sort of, his relationships to the artists included in the show. In doing so, his drawing makes more explicit how organizing an exhibition like this can be as much a portrait of the organizer as an exhibition of the artists. There are the artists he’s traveled with, played music with, worked with as art handlers, spent late nights in New Orleans with, and, of course, much overlap between each of these distinctions.
