First Slice 1/20/13: Mary Norwood selected to join Fulton elections board

Former Atlanta City Councilwoman Mary Norwood, who was narrowly defeated by Kasim Reed in the 2009 mayoral campaign runoff, has been nominated by the Fulton County GOP to join the Fulton Elections Board. Bit of history: Norwood's supporters raised questions over voter rolls, alleging they included people who who listed their addresses at demolished public housing complexes. The Buckhead resident also sued the board after she missed a deadline to qualify to run for a Fulton County Commission seat. The lawsuit was dismissed by a Fulton judge.

Noted screamer Rush Limbaugh last week asked if civil rights leaders such as Congressman John Lewis, D-Atlanta, would have been beaten up had they carried guns. ("I'm just asking," he said.) To which Lewis replied: "African Americans in the 60s could have chosen to arm themselves, but we made a conscious decision not to. We were convinced that peace could not be achieved through violence. Violence begets violence, and we believed the only way to achieve peaceful ends was through peaceful means."

Chip Rogers, the former right-wing state senator who resigned late last year to join Georgia Public Broadcasting, will be paid a $150,000 salary. He better come up with some great programming.

R.I.P. Mark Taylor, a longtime employee of WAGA.

Heh.

And yes, today's the day we find out if the Atlanta Falcons visit the Super Bowl. A Spotify playlist made by Mayor Kasim Reed (or his social media team) in advance of today's game includes such feelgood hits as Ludacris' "Move, Bit%$," Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)," and Coldplay (!).
