According to the Lakeside City Alliance, a pro-cityhood group, the city's rough borders would include "Interstate 85 to the west, Clairmont Road to the south, Chamblee-Tucker Road to the east and Pleasantdale Road to the north."
Mary Kay Woodworth, a DeKalb County native, said in a statement that the move would allow "50,000 citizens without a voice" to form their own government. She also added:
Members of the Alliance are all citizens of DeKalb County, and we look forward to assessing the feasibility of a local government that integrates efficiently with the current county government. We will study ways to fund and sustain a new city that provides services best overseen locally, while ensuring that the County can continue to provide the services it delivers best for all residents of DeKalb.
The organization's first meeting will be held on Feb. 13 at Lakeside High School. Georgia lawmakers would have to approve the proposal before allowing voters to cast a ballot on whether Lakeside should become a city. Looking at some reactions to the initial news, which has confused some folks, the plan might be revised before all is said and done.
