First Slice 2/8/13: Gov. Deal supports lowered HOPE Grant eligibility requirements

Gov. Nathan Deal voiced his support yesterday for a proposal than would lower the HOPE grant's GPA requirements from 3.0 to 2.0. The move, which has bipartisan support from state lawmakers, would enable more students to attend college. Some past HOPE critics believed that stricter eligibility forced thousands of technical college students to drop out of the schools they were attending.

Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Carol Hunstein called for legislative reform of the juvenile justice system, which she referred to as costly and ineffective, during her State of the Judiciary address. The judge also remarked: "When did we start believing that a sixth grader should be suspended because she brought a Tweety Bird wallet to school, that was attached to a 10-inch chain?"

The AJC reports that DeKalb County Schools has reached a "mutual understanding of separation" with Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson. Under the terms, Atkinson would receive more than $114,000 for leaving, plus payment for her unused vacation days. More details to come this afternoon.

Ethics reform continues to be a work in progress down under the Gold Dome.
