First Slice 2/12/13: Obama to promote education initiative during Decatur visit

A few more details were announced about President Barack Obama's post-State of the Union visit this week to a Decatur school. The AJC reports that the president will speak about a plan that could offer more 3- and 4-year-olds from low-income families more opportunities to access pre-K education programs. A White House official added that Obama "certainly does view his trip to Atlanta as a good opportunity for him to really drill down on some of the policies that are going to be so critical to strengthening our policies for the middle class."

Did you know that "more murders were committed last year with hammers than with shotguns, rifles or AK-47s?" Neither did we. But you can thank state Sen. Bill Jackson, R-Augusta, who enlightened fellow lawmakers during a discussion over a mental-health bill, for that little soundbite of joy. It's also entirely inaccurate, as James Carter pointed out a few hours later.

WABE's Kate Sweeney has an interesting piece on last weekend's Arts Health Day, an event supporting health care for artists.

State Rep. Earnest Smith has co-sponsored a bill that would make mildly amusing photoshop jobs the defamation of an "unknowing person wrongfully ... identified as the person in an obscene depiction" illegal. If passed, the crime would be a misdemeanor that comes complete with a $1,000 fine.
