On Saturday morning, Michael Mills became the first-known paraplegic to crawl up Stone Mountain. Mills opted to leave his wheelchair behind and used his hands and knees to make the ascent. Saturday's crawl was not only the beginning of Spartan training for the athlete, but also a call to awareness. Mills wanted to prove that there is no such thing as a disability and also raise money for the charity Bert's Big Adventure, a nonprofit helping chronic and terminally ill children and their families make a trip to Walt Disney World.
Obstacle Racing Magazine helped promote the event and called on people to not only participate in the hike but to stretch and challenge themselves as well. In addition to sandbags or tires, one person carried 110 pounds of steel plates. Three people ran up and down the mountain as many times as they were able.
