Old Fourth Ward, you're getting a... self-storage facility?

The retail and office center once home to Lennys gets razed for a self-storage facility
The strip mall complex along Decatur Street in the Old Fourth Ward that once housed Lenny's (R.I.P.) and my personal favorite, Buffalo Soldier Tax Accountants, is quickly being demolished to make way for a New Atlanta. In the vacant property's place will rise ... a self-storage facility.

According to neighborhood sources and City Hall filings, the property, located at one of the entrances to the vibrant neighborhood and situated just a few blocks from the energy of Edgewood Avenue and the Atlanta Beltline, is supposed to become home to a four-story building where people can store the things they don't want to see but still want to keep.

Some residents aren't pleased. The neighborhood is pushing for mixed-use developments to complement the nearby Eastside Trail (which is already hugged by at least two storage facilities) and streetcar. Residents told city planners that they didn't think self-storage was the "highest and best use" for the parcel when the facility was first proposed in the summer of 2011. One property owner tells CL that several O4W properties are currently zoned to allow similar projects.

Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall, who represents the area and much of Atlanta's urban core, sounded perplexed when he learned about its construction. Hall's launched a temporary "#nomorestorage" campaign on Twitter to raise awareness.
