Tyler Perry presents Tyler Perry's studio expansion; Madea meets Sophia

The announcement was more low-key than a typical Tyler Perry production, but during a recent interview with "Entertainment Tonight"'s Rocsi Diaz (also a New Orleans native), Perry let word leak about a planned studio expansion.

But it may not be taking place at his 30-acre southwest Atlanta complex Tyler Perry Studios, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

Last month, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported a company with apparent ties to Perry recently acquired 856 acres in Douglas County, southwest of Six Flags Over Georgia. The purchase set off speculation among nearby residents and film industry insiders that Perry could move or expand production operations there.

Meanwhile, Perry's OWN network debut approaches. On May 28 and 29, Oprah Winfrey's network will begin airing Perry's two new shows, which will be the first original scripted series from the network. "The Haves and Have Nots" is a drama produced by Perry. Think "Downton Abbey" cast with black people - at least that's what one blogger jokingly likened it to upon reading the premise of the show, which follows the lives of a rich family and their maid. Other bloggers have since repeated the comparison minus the sarcasm, which has undoubtedly set up a weird set of expectations even for a Tyler Perry production. Sounds like must-see TV.

Perry and Oprah are in full promo mode per the recent OWN commercial (above), which features Oprah revising her role as Sophia in a spoof of The Color Purple while Perry gets his Madea on. But the pairing of the two media titans will be nothing to laugh at If Perry's shows are successful in salvaging Winfrey's struggling network.

Perry's other offering is a half-hour sitcom. Titled "Love Thy Neighbor," it's set in a restaurant filled with quirky characters seeking advice. Despite the cliché titles, these shows could work. But only if Oprah provides the laugh track for the sitcom.
