First Slice 7/25/13: When sinkholes attack (southeast Atlanta edition)

Atlanta made it's debut on Comedy Central's Drunk History program with a weeble-wobble account of Coca-Cola's origins, the FBI's tapping of MLK's bedroom, and the exposure of oddball KKK rituals.

On the police beat: The Cobb County school system wants to spend upward of $500,000 to purchase 17 police cruisers to help protect its schools. Meanwhile, gun manufacturer Glock - who's U.S. headquarters is in Cobb County - has just signed a contract to supply 2,300 pistols to the Atlanta Police Department.

A southeast Atlanta resident is worried for her safety and her pets after a series of seemingly random sinkholes have popped up in her yard off Hosea L. Williams Dr. At last count there were five. Atlanta's Department of Public Works is still trying to figure out the cause.

The longest-running 'crack baby' study has come to an end after 23 years, but the results aren't exactly what experts expected:

"Poverty is a more powerful influence on the outcome of inner-city children than gestational exposure to cocaine ... "
