DeKalb County School Board Chairman Melvin Johnson confirmed to WSB-TV that gunshots were fired at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in unincorporated DeKalb County. According to 11 Alive, authorities said that no injuries were reported and that all children are safe. The assailant's bullets did shatter some of the school's glass.
Superintendent Michael Thurmond told the AJC the shooter, whom he described as a
25-year-old 20-year-old male, was "apprehended" with a rifle in hand. No motive, he said, had so far been determined.
WSB-TV also reports the suspect was white and armed with an AK-47. They further describes the incident:
Someone in the school office called Channel 2 Action News to report that there was a shooter in the school. The person told a Channel 2 assignment desk editor that the gunman asked to call WSB-TV. Shots could be heard over the call.
According to news reports, children were brought outside of the school. Parents are now reportedly being urged to pick up their children at a nearby Walmart.
