Atlanta photographer gets into Buckhead gunfight during late night Peachtree Road photo shoot

An Atlanta photographer found himself in a shootout after a Buckhead photo shoot turned into a carjacking attempt.

Robert Oliver, whose recent nude photo shoot with model Gabrielle Mirville sparked a legal controversy, was working on another photography project near 2829 Peachtree Road early this morning when the trouble started.

Atlanta Police tell CL two men approached Oliver close to where he parked his car and started asking him about his photography. According to the photographer, one of the two suspects eventually pulled a gun from his sweatpants and told the photographer, "Give me the keys." But Oliver didn't follow the suspect's instructions and instead fired in their direction.

"As the suspect pulled out his handgun and demanded [Oliver's] keys, [he] produced his own handgun and shot several rounds at the suspect who at that point retreated," APD spokeswoman Kim Jones says. "As the suspect and his accomplice retreated they both fired shots at [Oliver], who jumped into his car, leaving his camera and tripod and fled the area."

As Oliver sought shelter inside a nearby Fellini's Pizza, Jones says the suspects also left the scene in what the photographer described as a dark-colored "two-tone Camry with body damage."

Around 1:15 a.m., he waved down a Georgia State Patrol trooper and told him what happened. Multiple witnesses confirmed Oliver's accounts. After APD documented his weapon's serial number, they determined there was no probable cause and allowed him to leave with his weapon.

We've reached out to the photographer to find out more about what happened. We'll post an update if we hear back.
