First Slice 10/28/13: Local man angry after daughter buys book about Islam at school

The Marietta Daily Journal, which occasionally likes to troll metro Atlanta by publishing opinion columns suggesting dogs should bite people cruising for sex in parks and bashing Gay History Month at state universities, is at it again. This time it's a news story about a Cobb County man angered that a book about Islam was being sold at a school book fair. Money quote from the pissed-off papa: "I don't want this culture around my children, let's get them educated first. Learn to read and write before we start teaching (about) the fanaticals."

Concerned about hog feces getting into the water supply? You might want to pay attention to a proposal under consideration by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division that would allow some hog farms to be exempt from certain regulations.

Your morning crime round-up: Police are investigating an apparent burglary attempt after a car rammed into the West End Mall. In addition, officers are trying to learn why a man was shot in the head and left for dead on Olympian Way in southwest Atlanta.

R.I.P., Lou Reed.

Worth reading behind the AJC paywall: How's your local government or school system's pension plan doing? Probably not that well.
