Juvenile charged in Kirkwood shooting; vigil planned tonight for victim Xavier Arnold

Atlanta Police on Saturday announced that a juvenile was arrested in connection to the death of Xavier Arnold, a U.S. Army reservist and art school student who died after being shot during a robbery attempt in Kirkwood.

The juvenile today was charged with one count of murder and one count of armed robbery. Given the suspect's age, APD does not plan to release his name. The investigation remains active as multiple law enforcement authorities search for more information. APD last night announced that anyone who provided information leading to the suspect's arrest would receive a $5,000 CrimeStoppers reward.

Arnold, 21, and his friend were shot during what police described as a "senseless robbery" while walking along a bike trail near Pullman Yard on Thursday night. He later died from his injuries at Grady Memorial Hospital.

The Chamblee High School graduate, who has been remembered as a talented artist, was a Savannah College of Art and Design student who recently transferred to the Atlanta campus. As a reservist, According to WSB-TV, Arnold, who friends called "X," designed maps and provided intelligence to commanders.

The Kirkwood neighborhood has invited its neighbors and others to participate in a "quiet vigil" tonight at 5 p.m. at 241 Warren St. to show support for Arnold. Participants are encouraged to wear or carry a large "X" to commemorate Arnold.

"The family appreciates all the support offered and expressed to date," Neighborhood Planning Unit O Chair Earl Williamson said in a statement about the vigil.
