First Slice 2/7/14: New gun bill clears committee

Guns in bars, what a great idea!

After two days of hearings, Ga House Bill 875 has cleared the Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee. If you're someone who would like to carry a firearm into bars, churches, and some government buildings, this means you're one step closer to being able to be packing while you party, pray, and pay (or whatever one does in some government buildings). If you're a college student who is licensed to own a gun and would also like to carry your weapon onto your campus, you're in luck. The bill reduces this act to a misdemeanor and a $100 fine.

The King family drama continues to unfold as Bernice King held a press conference and granted a series of interviews to publicly respond to the request from her brothers, Dexter King and Martin Luther King III, to surrender MLK's Nobel Peace Prize and Bible so that they can sell the items. She said, "While I love my brothers dearly, this latest decision by them is extremely troubling. Not only am I appalled and utterly ashamed, I am frankly disappointed that they would even entertain the thought of selling these precious items. It reveals a desperation beyond comprehension." There has been no public response from either of the brothers.

MARTA has decided upon the developer they want to work with to transform the area around the King Memorial Station into a mixed-use development that would include 386 apartments and 13,000-square feet of retail space.

In a raid on a tobacco shop, the GBI and Dalton police seized at least 30 pounds of a liquid synthetic marijuana that is made to be used with vapor pens. Marketed as incense under the brand name "Cloud Nine," the synthetic cannabinoid is thought to be available under the table in a variety of locations throughout the metro Atlanta area.
