Atlanta arms garbage trucks with snow plows

After last week's winter chaos, many Atlanta residents have heeded the warnings about today's icy conditions and stayed off the roads. That's allowed city and state workers to be more effective in clearing streets and highways.

This time around, City Hall is also getting a bit resourceful with its cleanup efforts beyond simply hiring contractors. A spokesperson for Mayor Kasim Reed tells CL that the city's public works department has equipped 10 garbage trucks with plows to assist a fleet of dedicated spreaders and snow plows.

WSB-TV captured one of those 10 chariots clearing off Peachtree Street:

It's hardly a new practice. There's plenty of other cities such as New York City, Chicago, and Indianapolis that have converted their sanitation services during times of need. But in a city that's struggled with snow removal, it's a smart move.
