First Slice 2/25/14: PETA wants Kennesaw State to 'stop exploiting' live owl as its school mascot

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is asking Kennesaw State University to stop subjecting Sturgis, an owl that plays the part of school mascot, to all kinds of danger at sporting events and school functions. "An arena filled with bright lights, screaming fans, flashing cameras, and loud noises is terrifying and distressing for animals," a PETA release said. "Intelligent, sensitive birds simply do not belong at sporting events."

The bipartisanship alliance between Mayor Kasim Reed and Gov. Nathan Deal isn't as unlikely as one might think. Similar partnerships between Republican governors and black Democratic mayor are starting to happen across the county, The Atlantic says.

State Rep. Sam Moore apologized for introducing a measure that would've ended a state law that bans sex offenders from loitering at places where children might be hanging out. "In hindsight, this rookie mistake was silly," he told reporters.
